Coming to grips with the state budget
We keep hearing about the size of the current state budget deficit as $400 million. But as Duane Goossen, former budtget director for three governors, told the Hutchinson Rotary Club Monday, the actual size of the shortfall is actually $800 million, spelling out just how we got in this predicament.
The Kansas Senate, meanwhile, couldn't approve the latest plan by Republican leaders, as message got more heated and state employees are staring at possible furloughs.
We don't need to tell you we've had a lot of rain lately, but just how much? This May was the soggiest on record for most of Kansas, with many areas getting twice their normal rainfall. Even in normally dry western Kansas, Dodge City got more rain this May than it had seen since 1881.

Was that stolen Red Bull you were drinking?
It may have been if you got it at the Zip Trip Food & Fuel in downtown Hutchinson. As least, that's what prosecutor say in charging the owner, Chris Patel, with crimes including possession of stolen property.
Hutch turns out for Nepal
Organizers were "amazed" by the support for an auction to raise money for Nepal earthquake survivors this past weekend at Ten Thousand Villages/Etcetera Shop in downtown Hutchinson.
A 28-year-old Sterling man led police on quite a chase from Rice to Reno counties over the weekend. It took Sterling Police Department, Reno County Sheriff’s Office, Stafford County Sheriff’s Office, Stafford Police Department, South Hutchinson Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol to catch him.
The Hutchinson Monarchs opened their season Monday night with a pair of victories, sweeping a doubleheader against Salina.

Bruce becomes Caitlyn
Those of a certain age will remember when Bruce Jenner graced boxes of Wheaties after winning the Olympic decathlon. Well, Jenner is back creating a stir, this time as Caitlyn, on the cover of Vanity Fair, showing that his gender transition is complete.
